the theft of a VCR several video tapes tools and fishing equip ment valued at approximately $450 Alicia Elkins of Dutton reported the theft of several fishing poles and Problems in western Jackson County originated several months ago when officials in Madison Coun ty implemented an Enhanced 911 system to replace their Basic 911 system When the switch was made offi cials in Madison County dropped Basic 911 service to 1500 Jackson County residents who get their phone service through the Gurley exchange At that point the Jackson County Enhanced 911 Board of Directors down No serious injuries resulted from the accident William Haswell of Section was the sole occupant of the Blazer according to trooper reports Haswell was not injured in the accident Jose Rico 27 of Scottsboro was the driver of the Jeep Cherokee Rico and two passengers in his vehicle Laurel Rico 27 and Daniel Wheeler 6 all sustained minor injuries State troopers said if the trio had not been wearing their seat belts they could have sustained serious injuries The holiday weekend was also quiet for firefighters Scottsboro ire Chief Lonnie Webb said his depart ment responded to one small grass fire that was probably caused by careless fireworks use A firecracker apparently ignited a wheat field in Mack Broom Hollow Webb said the fire was not serious and was the only fire activity in Scottsboro over the weekend Jimmy Copeland chief of the Tri Community ire Department on North Sand Mountain said constant rainfall over the past several days meant little chance for a stray fire cracker to start a fire His department responded to no fireworks related fires over the weekend Billy Harbin chief of the Valley Volunteer ire Department in Tren ton also reported a quiet weekend with no fireworks related accidents ire departments in other areas of the county also reported quiet weekends risk of lung cancer when high levels exist in the air Radon eventually escapes from water into the air The study conducted by ADEM the Alabama Rural Water Associa tion and National Air and Radiation Environmental Laboratory found four wells above 300 in Jack son County: Three Springs Girls School at 424 Stevenson at Print Rock Valley High School at 303 and Hollywood at 364 The EPA decided to lower the standard ffter receiving more than 600 comments from scientists call ing the present level too stringent said Joe Power chief of the water supply branch of ADEM The new standard probably go into effect until late 1993 or early 1994 but Power said no rea son for Jackson County to correct its systems 'W wrote a letter to every system in the state explaining what they might need to do" he said with levels below 1000 1 told not to worry about their water no need to spend several hundreds of thousands of dollars to meet a standard that will soon be changed" weekend State troopers reported a total of 17 traffic fatalities across the rural areas of the state Most of those were in south Alabama Jackson County saw only one seri ous traffic accident over holiday weekend State troopers responded to a wreck on Alabama Highway 35 a half mile south of Scottsboro Satur day at 3:18 pm' A spokesperson for the state troop ers said the wreck involved two four wheel drive vehicles A 1984 Jeep Cherokee and a 1987 Chevrolet Blazer were involved in the accident State Trooper Terry Thomas who
